Workshop with Google – preparation for the 2020 elections



The general elections in Slovakia are quickly approaching. As the online space is increasingly becoming very important in this context the Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission was preparing itself, together with the colleagues from other relevant Slovak institutions, at a workshop with the representatives of the biggest search engine and video sharing platform – Google (YouTube), that was organised by the Council.

The aim of the meeting was to focus on the various measures that this company is implementing globally but also in the context of the upcoming elections in Slovakia and also to deepen the cooperation between the public institutions in Slovakia with this company. Representatives of several Slovak institutions have participated at this event including the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic and last but not least the employees of the Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission that have organised the event.

Google was represented at the event by Mrs Julia Schvarcová, Government Affairs and Public Policy Manager Google, that is responsible for Slovakia as a country at the Warsaw Google Office. She focused on Google´s elections work globally and specifically in Slovakia not only on Google Search but also on YouTube. She laid out the plans for several election relevant features in their products to be available before and during the elections. This has opened very interesting discussions with the participants from the Slovak institutions, including ways of possible cooperation and how all of these tools could fit into their work and be compatible with the local election rules. There was a consensus of the importance of this kind of a discussion as the political advertising campaigns are more and more shifting to online space.

This was a part of a series of meetings with the most relevant global platforms in the Slovak market (including with Facebook the same month). The long term aim is also to deepen the cooperation between the public institutions in Slovakia with these companies, that are becoming increasingly crucial also in the election process most notably online political advertising in Slovakia. These meetings are organised by the Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission as a natural extension of the international cooperation activities of the Council, including the position of the director of the Office of The Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission, Ľuboš Kukliš as a member of the board of the European Regulators Group for Audiovisual Media Services (ERGA).
